Jokes.

Noun:
A thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punch line.
Verb:
Make jokes; talk humorously or flippantly.

Jokes are typically for the entertainment of friends. The desired response is generally laughter; when this does not happen the joke is said to have "fallen flat" or "bombed".
However, jokes have other purposes and functions, common to comedy/humour/satire in general.

Example:

Knock, knock!
Who's there?
Wendy.
Wendy who?
Wendy today. Sunny tomorrow
